Garbage/Recycling Services

Garbage Service: Garbage is picked up each Friday and services are free for homeowners. Garbage is to be placed on the curb in the town-provided container each Friday by 6:00 am (the night before is recommended). Residents are asked to remove empty containers from the curb on Fridays after pickup.

Regular containers hold 96 gallons. Elderly or handicapped residents may request at 64- or 32-gallon container, available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The town only picks up garbage that fits in the container. If you have additional garbage, you must arrange pickup from a private contractor/service or take it to Rowan County facilities. If a container is damaged, a replacement container will be provided at a $45 charge.

A $45 container deposit is required for renters or estate property, in the same name as the water bill. The deposit is refunded when the occupant moves, and the container is returned cleaned and in good condition.

The following weeks containing holidays have Saturday garbage service, instead of Friday:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Good Friday
  • Memorial Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving

If recycling pickup is scheduled during the above weeks, it will also be delayed until Saturday.

Only waste generated at occupied residences and small businesses will be picked up. Garbage and refuse should be drained of liquid and wrapped in paper or other like material before it is placed in the container (no loose garbage). No appliances, plumbing fixtures, furniture, tires, batteries, vehicle parts, scrap metal, building material scraps, yard refuse, tree trimmings, animal carcasses, ashes or industrial waste are to be placed in the container for pick up.

Heavy item pickup: The town offers pickup of heavy items (appliances, furniture, etc.) twice a year with dates announced in the Town newsletter. This pickup also includes electronics recycling. Note: Items such as televisions, computers, monitors, printers, scanners, and computer peripherals such as keyboards and mice are banned from the county landfill.

Should you wish to remove these items prior to the Town of Cleveland Heavy Item pickup, please take them to Rowan County facilities listed at https://www.rowancountync.gov/972/Waste-Services.

Recycling Service: Recycling is picked up the 1st and 3rd Fridays beginning at 6:00 am. Town-provided containers are to be pulled to the curb for pickup.
