Town Park & Walking Trails

The Town of Cleveland offers residents and the community a choice of community parks and walking trails:

Danny Gabriel Veteran Memorial Park & Trail

Location: 201 School Street, Cleveland, NC 27013

The Danny Gabriel Veteran Memorial Park & Trail is located directly adjacent to the West Rowan Public Library and West Rowan Elementary School, on the same street as EMS & the Fire Department.

Danny Gabriel loved serving the Town of Cleveland Community. He served as a Town Commissioner for 20 years prior to becoming Mayor for six years, then served again as a Town Commissioner until his death in 2023.

Danny Gabriel had a vision for a Veteran Memorial Park. His wish was to provide veterans, their families, teachers, first responders, fire fighters and the multi-generational families of the Town of Cleveland community with a therapeutic, calm environment to manage stress and PTSD, while offering the children a safe, natural space to play and learn.

Upon his passing, The Town of Cleveland initiated plans to name the nearly two-acre Park on School Street “The Danny Gabriel Veteran Memorial Garden” in his honor and to fulfill his wish. The Town of Cleveland is home to a high percent of Veteran’s, 9.3 % higher than Rowan County’s and State of North Carolina’s percent of Veteran’s 7.6% average.

Phases of Development:
Phase One:

In CY 2024, The Town of Cleveland began revitalization of the park & Trail by adding a new paved trail, fencing and wrought iron benches to support community wellness.

Phase Two:

In February 2026, the Town Rowan Public Health and Rowan Literacy provided a grant to add “STORYWALK”, an interactive, outdoor literacy activity where pages from a children’s book are displayed on stations along the walking trail to allow families to read, walk and engage in stories in our park. The addition of STORYWALK demonstrates partnerships working together to improve the community well-being. Each month a new book will share a story that ties to the history of the Town of Cleveland Community and our Country with learning opportunities for families and educators to bond in nature with education.

Though a gracious grant from the Julian Robertson Foundation, the Park now has additional benches for both adults and children. Plus new picnic tables for expanded use of the park. Special thanks to Rowan Public Health, Rowan Literacy and The Blanche & Julian Robertson Foundation – your funding and support are a true reflection of the value of partnerships working together.
